NEW ORLEANS – Tackling the question of how America's aging infrastructure can support the
transportation of agricultural commodities in the future, Cindy Perret, of St. John Parish, was named the
organization's Discussion Meet winner here.

The aging condition of America’s roads and bridges took center
stage today in the Louisiana Farm Bureau's 86th annual meeting.
The Discussion Meet is designed to engage young farmers in topics
that impact daily production agriculture.

”A good transportation system is vital to rural communities as well
as the ag industry,” Perret said. “Trucking, rail and shipping
systems all need to be examined to determine how best to use
the transportation resources we have.

“It's an expensive subject," Perret continued. “Transport involves
not just roadways and their condition. Taxes and fuel costs enter
the equation. There isn't a simple solution, but we as producers,
who use our nation's transport systems to get our product both
off the farm and to the consumer, have to lead this discussion.”

Perret, assistant principal at Clinton Middle School in Clinton, La.,
was one of four finalists in the Discussion Meet. All finalists
brought a variety of informed perspectives to the infrastructure
question.

John Thomas Compton, of Jeff Davis Parish, suggested using the
state’s existing processing mills, grain elevators and transport
systems to more efficiently process and use commodities in-state.

”Diversifying the state's transport systems to move more product more efficiently would benefit both the
producers’ and the consumers’ bottom line,” said Heath Morris, a sugar producer from West Baton Rouge
Parish.

Renee Castro, a 4-H extension agent from Assumption Parish, offered the observation that safety
considerations also impact transport costs in the state.
However, it was Perret and her seamless, spot-on responses that took the title.

As the Discussion Meet winner, Perret wins a John Deere 4x2 Gator utility vehicle, courtesy of the Southern
Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, a $1,000 U.S. savings bonds from Syngenta and a comparable
savings bond from the Gowan Company.  She also wins an all-expense paid trip to the American Farm
Bureau Federation annual meeting in San Antonio in Jan. 2009, courtesy of the Louisiana Farm Bureau
Federation; a $500 cash merit award from Dodge; a $250 Sears gift certificate, courtesy of the Louisiana
Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, and a $250 cash merit award from the Louisiana Farm Bureau Radio
Network.

The Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet is a debate-style forum in which young producers
tackle current events affecting their industry.  The event is sponsored each year by the Farm Bureau’s
Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee.
