NEW ORLEANS – Demonstrating her knowledge of how the public perception of agriculture affects
legislation on local and national levels, Rachel Brown, of Jeff Davis Parish, won the Farm Bureau Talk Meet
Friday at the organization's annual meeting here.

“Interest, age and understanding of agriculture among our varied
public leads to a tremendously varied perception of the industry,"
Brown said in her opening statement. "Historically, the family farm
was perceived as a public good.  Today, Americans' expectations
of agriculture have broadened, but their understanding of the
industry and its complex issues has lessened."

Citing the federal Farm Bill and its impact on the industry at both
the local and national level, Brown said the non-farm public
generally doesn't pay much attention to this vital legislation, which
provides stability to farm production and producers, and results in
the safest, most abundant and nutritious food supply in the world.

Brown, a 16-year-old incoming junior at Hathaway High School,
has gained experience in public speaking and debate through her
involvement in 4-H, FFA and other school leadership organizations.
She hopes her background in the agricultural sciences will lead to
a career as a dietitian.

First runner-up in the Talk Meet was Jonathan Watson, of Lafayette
Parish. Watson, a 2008 graduate of Acadiana High School, will

attendLouisiana State University in the fall on a full Air Force scholarship.

Second runner-up in the competition was Brianna Temple Creel, who graduated from Pine High School in
Washington Parish in May. The former state FFA treasurer plans to major in agricultural education when she
attends college in the fall.

Contestants in the Louisiana Farm Bureau Talk Meet prepare a five-minute speech on a subject that
currently impacts the agricultural industry. Sponsored by the organization's Women's Committee, the Talk
Meet is one of several competitions held at the convention for the younger members of the state's largest
general farm organization.
