NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana poultry producers received encouraging news about guaranteed loans from
a representative of the Farm Service Agency during the 87th Annual Louisiana Farm Bureau Convention in
New Orleans June 27.
T.C. Chachere, with the FSA, said new guidance offers growers
who have their operations interrupted an opportunity to delay or
defer loan payments in the 90/10 federal loan program.
“The new guidance allows producers to either defer payments
for 90 to 180 days, or delay payments for one to five years,”
Chachere said. “We’re all hoping this is a short-term problem
and things are going to get better soon.”
Chachere said the program would be especially helpful for
growers such as those in northeast Louisiana who recently
found themselves in a bind with the closure of the Pilgrim’s
Pride plant in Farmerville.
“The Farmerville plant is taking a long time getting back up
and running,” Chachere said. “We’ll work with them to rework
their contracts or defer them.”
As for new producers, Chachere said one of the requirements
for securing a 90/10 loan will be a three-year contract with a
company providing birds and feed before the loan is made.
“No loans have been made under this program yet because it
just started at the beginning of June,” Chachere said. “I don’t
think we’ll have any problem getting companies to go along with it.”
