NEW ORLEANS-- Louisiana agriculture just got much more attractive with the crowning of the 2009-10
Louisiana Farm Bureau Queen. Sarah Beth Stafford, a glowing blonde brought up on her family farm in
Mount Hermon, won the annual competition after a week of interviews and other activities designed to test
the girls’ knowledge of the industry. Though Stafford’s ag root run deep, they took a backseat to her
sparkling presence and engaging manner during the contest. She aced the contest question “Why is Farm
Bureau relevant tot the livelihood of our farmers?”
“Louisiana Farm Bureau is the voice of our farmers in the state,”
she said. “They provide an opportunity for producers to be heard
in Washington and in our state legislature. If there’s a problem
on the farm or with the law, Farm Bureau helps us get what we
need to do our jobs.”
Smarts and ag knowledge wrapped up in a poised green-eyed
blond should help get the message out about ag in the state.
Most Farm Bureau Queens log up to 10,000 miles during their
year-long reign, traveling the state and nation to represent
Farm Bureau at festivals, fairs and other events.
Stafford, 17, is the daughter of Bryan and Lisa Stafford. She
attends Bowling Green School and is active in Beta Club,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Interact and the Buccanettes
dance team. She also is involved in competition dance and
is a Relay for Life ambassador.
First runner-up in the Queen’s Contest was Hailey Elizabeth
Hanks, 17, daughter of Chad and Leslie Hanks of Lafayette
Parish. Brittany Lynne Weimer, 19, was named second runner-up
as well as Miss Congeniality. Weimer, of Lafourche, is the
daughter of Philip and Katherine Weimer of Raceland.
The Queen’s Contest is the culminating event of the Louisiana
Farm Bureau’s annual meeting, held in New Orleans. Sponsored
by the Women’s Leadership Committee, it is one of many events
held that involve and engage the youth of the organization in Farm
Bureau.
