No one needs to tell young farmers about the challenges
of our profession. Combine young families, working
spouses and the rigors of raising crops and livestock,
and the occupation of farming makes other professions
look like a cakewalk. That’s why it’s important that
young farmers join our YF&R program.
Young Farmer's & Ranchers
No one needs to tell young farmers about the challenges of our profession.
Combine young families, working spouses and the rigors of raising crops and livestock, and the
occupation of farming makes other professions look like a cakewalk. That’s why it’s important that
young farmers join our YF&R program.
Like other professional organizations, YF&R offers opportunities to interact with others who have chosen
farming and ranching as their livelihood. Becoming part of your parish Farm Bureau’s YF&R program
helps you gain leadership skills, as well as allowing for personal networking with farm leaders across
your area. Like any other business, knowing what the competition is doing, even if it’s your next-door
neighbor, is essential to maintaining and growing your business.
As the year progresses, our state YF&R Committee will be actively involved in programs like our YF&R
Leadership Conference, which traditionally takes place the last weekend of January. In March of this
year we’ll travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with members of our congressional delegation. The topic:
the next farm bill. Congress plans to write a new bill that will take effect starting with the 2008 crop
year. And while the current farm law, which extends through crop year 2007, has been a good one,
producers want to see a few changes made to the next national farm law.
As a member of your parish Farm Bureau’s YF&R program you’re eligible to take advantage of several
contest opportunities, including our annual Achievement Award, Award of Excellence and our Discussion
Meet. At the state level the YF&R Achievement Award winner receives a host of prizes, including a new
Dodge Ram pickup. All these state contests have national equivalents, with Louisiana’s winners
traveling to the American Farm Bureau Convention each January. Nationally, the prize packages are
tremendous, including Dodge trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, cash and savings bonds.
I would encourage any young farmer or rancher who’s not already a member of our program to join us.
YF&R offers a multitude of opportunities and helps keep the future generation of agriculture strong. For
